The Case Files of the Oriental Sleuths: Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto & Mr. Wong
By David Rothel
318 pages
List price: $24.95

The Case Files of the Oriental Sleuths offers the reader an in-depth collection
of information on the screen's "Big Three" Asian detectives. Two-thirds of the book covers Charlie Chan, and rightly
so, as he was the breakthrough Oriental detective who led the way for others and whose popularity and name recognition continue
to this day.
David Rothel gives readers a detailed look at the development of each sleuth, focusing on
the varied forms of popular media that carried the adventures of the three detectives. Rothel presents synopses of films,
radio dramas, and books, and describes other items such as comic books, Better Little Books, and games.
In the case of Charlie Chan, the author shares information and summaries of all of the films,
including those made before and after the series proper. Information regarding the various radio dramas features synopses
whenever possible as well as information on the actors who portrayed Chan in these 15-minute adventures. For fans of
the Keye Luke-voiced The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan, all 16 episodes are examined in detail!
Anyone who is interested in learning more about Charlie Chan, Mr. Moto, and Mr. Wong will
find The Case Files of the Oriental Sleuths a very worthy addition to your book collection.
Charlie Chan: The Untold Story of the Honorable Detective and His Rendezvous with American History
By Yunte Huang
354 Pages
List Price: $26.95

On rare occasions, there crosses my threshold a book
that demands attention to the point of being nearly impossible for this reader to put down.
Charlie Chan: The Untold Story of the Honorable Detective and His Rendezvous with American History is one
such rare reading experience. Yunte Huang's work is an exhaustive study, and,
in the best sense of the word, an exposé,
on the subject of Charlie Chan, Chang Apana (the Honolulu detective who formed the basis for Earl Derr Biggers' legendary
sleuth), as well as the distinctly rich fabric of American culture that contributed to the fictional detective's persona and
milieu. It is also a story about the author's search for himself as well as Chan
amidst the swirling mix of the elements of American culture.
The
author has put together the most unique analysis available of America's most beloved detective, who
was an instant hit with readers worldwide and who reached even greater heights on the silver screen for nearly two decades. Charlie Chan reads as a wondrous, meandering journey that we make along with
Huang as he lets us become a part of his search for the detective. To be sure,
the tale is dreamlike at times as we are thrust back and forth in time and space while we are provided clues to the full picture
of Charlie Chan as we meet such luminaries as Chang Apana and Earl Derr Biggers, as well as the actors who portrayed Chan
in films.
Hawaiian
history also plays out largely in Dr. Huang's study. On this I will briefly state
that, while it was evidently a very noble and caring effort on his part, a number of errors regarding Hawaii's past will be encountered by readers. It
would seem to this reader that, given the vastness of his endeavor, Yunte Huang proved himself to be human, perhaps relying
on information (His work is copiously footnoted!) that was itself in error. However,
I feel that the overall points will not be lost on the casual reader.
Yunte
Huang's approach to the character is refreshingly open and he is unapologetic in a way that only someone such as he, born
and raised in China - Charlie Chan's homeland,
can be in our increasingly politically correct culture. Pulling no punches, Huang
uses terms that are, today, unacceptable, such as "Chinaman," often referring to himself as such, to such a degree as to effectively
defuse the term of its explosive nature. The reader is reminded by the author
about how American culture changed during the great waves of immigration which, as societal pressures grew as a result, unfortunate
events, both legislative and societal, resulted. As literature and popular media
of the time often vilified Chinese, the arrival of Charlie Chan through the creative efforts of Earl Derr Biggers was a complete
reversal of that sad norm.
Yunte
Huang addresses the controversy that originated several decades ago about Charlie Chan supposedly being a negative stereotype. Rather than preaching to readers on this aspect of Chan, Huang allows us, as participants
on his tour of discovery, to answer the question for ourselves. As a component
of balance, included is Keye Luke's comment regarding the accusation that Charlie Chan demeans the Chinese race: "Demeans! My God! You've got a Chinese hero!"
In
the end, Dr. Huang completes our journey where it began, with Detective Chang Apana.
Both Chang Apana and his brother in literature, Charlie Chan, are forever linked historically and culturally. Both are a result of the dynamic, bubbling stew that was and remains American culture.

Our Yearly Chat Journey Through the Chan Series:
Several years ago, we began a series of journeys through the entire Charlie
Chan film series, which included a few "side stops" along the way. This year, we have scheduled additional "side
stops" related to the Chan series. The "side stops" include, but not limited to, Mr.
Moto, Mr. Wong, and The New Adventures of Charlie Chan. It is
our hope that you will join us on these special "side stops."
If you do not currently have Mr. Moto's Gamble, the Mr. Wong series, or The New Adventures of Charlie Chan in
your collection, it is humbly suggested that you consider purchasing them. For New Adventures, highly
recommended is the DVD set released by The Nostalgia Merchant. It is the best quality available of the TV series and costs $36.95 plus shipping. Oldies.com is a great source for discount prices for DVDs, including the Mr. Wong series at $16.95 plus shipping.
For our 2011 Chan-Chat journey, we will be viewing episodes from these three series on a regular basis. "Side-stop"
viewings will continue into our future excursions as well. Beginning in 2012, we will follow a permanent (or an
established) schedule that will repeat each year there after. This established schedule will bring regularity and predictability
to our journeys, and we will have the opportunity to adjust the "side-stops" along the way.

A lantern that shed light on Charlie Chan...and others that could have...
Upon viewing Charlie Chan's Secret, Chan fan and lantern collector and expert, George Burl,
graciously contributed the following images of vintage lanterns. One example is seen in the above-mentioned film,
while two others are of related interest.

Urlich's lantern. Charlie Chan's Secret. It's called a Dietz
D-Light, circa 1912.

This is Swedish, Primus 1001, circa 1930, Warner Oland's homeland.

Coleman lantern L220, circa 1928. Popular in movies from the Charlie
Chan era, 1930's and later.
"These lanterns are similiar, but not exactly the same as those appearing in the Charlie Chan movie, Dead Men Tell. They are both ship lanterns and from that period and
earlier. Both are from the 1920's and earlier but were still used on ships in the 1940's when the movie was made:"

This is a Perkins
Nr 21 Anchor lantern. Lantern is made of brass.

This has a Perkins
glass but no manufacturer name. Assume its Perkins, too. Made of galvanized metal.
Sidney Toler's Gravesite:
Some time ago, Mark Bernard searched out
Sidney Toler's grave marker at Highland Cemetary in Wichita, Kansas. Here are three of the pictures that he has graciously
shared with us that document his visit.

"Thank you - so much..."

A profound debt of gratitude to those who have contributed items of interest to this humble museum...
OUR RECENT ADDITIONS:
Please take a look at all of the new material that is currently being added to our Study. If you have not visited this room recently, you will find new additions on Earl Derr Biggers,
Charlie Chan, Warner Oland, and MORE...
Please look for the many new images, among about a thousand, that are continually
added to our Gallery.
Please visit our Charlie Chan Glossary. This source offers definitions to slang, both of obscure and well-known meaning, notable places,
people, and things that are mentioned or seen in Charlie Chan movies.
"The Charlie Chan Chanthology" continues to sell...

Since its release
in the summer of 2004, the sales of MGM Home Entertainment's Charlie Chan Chanthology,
a six-DVD box set, have remained phenomenal. All starring Sidney Toler, the titles in the set represent the first
six Chan films that were produced by Monogram Pictures after the company took over the series in 1943. Titles in the set are:
CHARLIE CHAN IN THE SECRET SERVICE (1944), THE CHINESE CAT (1944), MEETING AT MIDNIGHT (aka BLACK
MAGIC) (1945), THE JADE MASK (1945), THE SCARLET CLUE (1945) and THE SHANGHAI COBRA (1945).
This marks the first commercial release of Charlie Chan movies on DVD.
You may still order The Charlie Chan Chanthology at amazon.com (with FREE postage available!) as well as through other outlets including eBay, where it can be found with great regularity (often at a very low price!).
Please request Charlie Chan movies at TCM:
Since the unfortunate fiasco revolving around Fox Movie Channel's (FMC) scuttled showing
of Charlie Chan movies during the summer of 2003, the general consensus among fans of the venerable detective is
that our best hope for any showings in the near future rests with Turner Classic Movies (TCM). Our hopes have been rewarded
of late with showings, including a mini-matathon last year (2008), although sporadic. So, please take a moment
to suggest a Charlie Chan movie be shown on TCM, and, in fact, please do so with regularity! (You may suggest a specific
film, or you may also suggest "Any Charlie Chan movie.") Together
we have made a difference...
